Marula is native to many African countries (including South Africa, Malawi, Namibia, Niger, Botswana, Gambia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and more). Commercial marula groves require only the use of natural fertilisers (like cow manure), and minimal irrigation. Unfortunately, there are quite a few pest insects (fruit flies etc.) which can be problematic and the use of some pesticides is mostly necessary.

Marula Oil is made by first removing the fleshy fruit and skin from the kernels. The kernels are subsequently ground and pressed to extrude the oil. The traditional method of extracting marula seed oil is to use a large, wooden mortar and pestle.
