Iron Blue can be found in many certified natural, and organic makeup products including blush, eye liner, nail polish, and biodegradable glitter.
Iron Blue is made by oxidizing (under acidic conditions, with sodium dichromate) the precipitate which results from mixing solutions of ferrous sulfate and sodium ferrocyanide in the presence of ammonium sulfate. The oxidized product is filtered, washed, and dried.
The USFDA indicates that Iron Blue is not suitable for products applied to the lips but is permitted for use in lipsticks in Japan and the EU.
