Candelilla shrubs grow wild in the arid semi-deserts of Mexico and Arizona, California, and Texas where they developed a thick waxy cuticle to prevent water loss. It grows well even in poor soils, and has a very low water requirement.

Candelilla Wax was made from the protective layer found on the stems. The whole stems are processed using a mixture of boiling water and an acid. The type of acid used was most commonly sulfuric acid but more sustainable citric acid extraction methods have been in use since 2013.
