Why we love it

Why Faithful to Nature loves it:
Herbatint permanent hair dye is free of ammonia, resorcinol and parabens. We believe it is the safest option that currently exists on the market for those who do not wish to use henna-based dye. It contains propylene glycol which is on our list of ingredients to avoid, and some other ingredients (like Ethanolamine) that we would not usually allow. We think grey is beautiful, but if you are going to buy dye, and don’t want to use a henna product, this is the next safest option. This decision took us 2 years to make, and was swayed by the large amount of customer requests to stock this product.

Herbatint vs Ordinary Dyes: With Herbatint, you get the same range and depth of colour as you would with ordinary chemical-laden hair dyes, and the same long-lasting coverage, only with gentler ingredients.

Herbatint vs Henna: Herbatint actually penetrates the hair with colour; henna simply creates a solid coating around the hair shaft.

Going Darker:

How does Herbatint penetrate the hair without ammonia?
Herbatint uses plant-based alkalines, with a maximum pH level of 8.5 (ammonia is 12.5); this prevents structural damage to the hair shaft. This also means that once the colour pigments have been deposited, the hair cuticle can be completely re-closed, resulting in better hair condition and far less colour fade. Aloe vera also assists with the transfer of colour.

Are Phenylenediamines (PPDs) present in Herbatint?
Like all permanent hair colour products, Herbatint does contain PPDs, the colour pigments used to alter your hair's natural shade. Though the research is not conclusive, it has been suggested that PPDs are potentially harmful. Herbatint contains the smallest possible amounts (0.8 - 0.9%) in most of the colours, with a maximum of 2.1% in the darkest colour. Current European legislation allows for PPDs to comprise up to 6% of the constituents of hair dyes. Herbatint also contains numerous plant extracts to reduce the impact of PPDs. However, we recommend that pregnant ladies and people undergoing chemotherapy treatment do not use any permanent hair dye.

I have had allergic reactions to hair dyes in the past; will I react to Herbatint?
Most people who have reacted to ordinary dyes in the past do not react to Herbatint, as the formula does not contain many of the potential irritants normally used in hair dyes, and much lower levels of those that may cause irritation. Herbatint also contains aloe, which is an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant. However, there are a small number of people with allergic reactions to all kinds of substances and we strongly advise performing a patch test before dyeing your hair.

Which herbal extracts are included in Herbatint?
Herbal extracts include Aloe Vera, which is rich in vitamins, enzymes, panthenol and natural minerals to protect and nourish the hair while colouring. Meadowfoam, rich in vitamins E and F, ensures better colour cover and longer lasting results. Witch Hazel is rich in essential oils and treats the scalp. Betula Alba (White Birch) is an effective hair tonic and Echinacea hydrates the hair.

How often should I colour my hair?
With permanent colour, we suggest colouring re-growth when it becomes noticeable (usually after 5 weeks).

Can I use Herbatint after a perm?
Yes, but use a shade lighter than you want, as permed hair is more porous. Leave the dye on for only 10 - 15 minutes, unless you are covering grey, in which case leave it on for 30 - 40 minutes.

Does Herbatint work on bleached hair?
Yes, but remember to mix a gold shade with a natural if your target shade is 6N or above. 5N and below must be mixed with gold/copper on bleached hair.

Will Herbatint cover my grey?
Herbatint covers grey 100% on its first application, however, if you are more than 20% grey and you are opting for one of our fashion shades (Golden, Mahogany, Copper or Ash), we highly recommend that it is mixed with the appropriate natural tone. Natural colours are indicated with a letter N, from Black 1N to Platinum 10N. To cover mostly grey hair for example, 20ml of 4R Copper (the chosen colour) should be mixed with 40ml of 4N Chestnut (the corresponding numbered natural shade) and combined with 60ml of glycol developer. Accordingly, if 20ml of 7R Copper Blonde is chosen, you would then mix this with 40ml of 7N Blonde and combine with 60ml of Glycol developer. The higher the percentage of Grey that needs to be covered the greater the proportion of Natural colour that needs to be included.

I went from being a natural blonde, to being a strawberry blonde.. Maybe rather use it on the bottom portion of you hair as it made it more ashy, but my roots went straight to orange/strawberry blonde :/
As usual with Herbatint, the colour predictability / reliability is useless (not at all ashy as the box suggests), and the grey coverage (on my very few grey/white hairs) is non-existent. However!!! It does lighten and lift pretty well, there is reasonable variety/highlighti-ness, and of course it's gentle on the hair. My hair gave quite a coppery result especially at the roots on virgin growth, which I fixed with a serious purple and blue toner of my own concoction (manic panic+olaplex). Greys were not covered (are you supposed to leave it on for hours??) but they were a little lifted, and are now better blended in to the rest of the hair more like highlights, which is an improvement. On balance, I will use this colour again for the lifting ability coupled with gentle use - knowing that I will have to do a serious toning job afterwards.
Love the quality of this product and its gentleness on the hair. Trying to find a cooler, less yellow shade of blonde has been a challenge. The good news is you can mix your own personalised colour. I mixed a quarter of this colour bottle with three quarters of a bottle of Light Blonde.. It gave a wonderfully natural dark blonde result.
this works amazing, I am tiered of going to the salon to colour my hair so bought this. it works so well in my hair. my natural hair is dark blonde like a mousy colour and I used to colour my hair light blonde, this blonde is more of a natural look, It made my previous colour darker and my roots lighter. perfect.
A very beautiful natural blonde paired with light blonde. Herbatint doesn't have the unpleasant ammonia scent of your general hair dye or cause irritation on my scalp. Forever my choice dye! Only pity is the colour seems to change/fade quickly to a much brassier colour
