Amino Acids FAQs

Are BCAAs and amino acids the same thing?

Not quite. Amino acids are the building blocks of all protein — there are 20 in total, nine of which are essential, meaning your body cannot make them and must get them from food or supplementation. BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) are a subset of just three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They're named for their branched molecular structure and are particularly well-researched for muscle protein synthesis and reducing exercise fatigue. So all BCAAs are amino acids, but not all amino acids are BCAAs.

What's the difference between BCAAs and EAAs?

BCAAs contain three essential amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine). EAAs (essential amino acids) contain all nine — including the three BCAAs, plus histidine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, and tryptophan. EAAs are considered the more complete option for muscle building and recovery, since all nine are required for protein synthesis. BCAAs can still be useful for targeted support during training, but if you're choosing between the two, EAAs offer broader benefit. At Faithful to Nature, you'll find both as part of our sports nutrition range.

When is the best time to take amino acids?

Timing depends on your goal. For performance and endurance, amino acids taken during training can help delay fatigue and support energy. For recovery, taking them post-workout helps kick-start muscle repair. If you train fasted, a serving before your session can protect muscle tissue. Unlike protein powders, amino acids are rapidly absorbed and don't require digestion in the same way, making them a practical option during exercise too.

Do I need amino acids if I'm already taking protein powder?

If you're hitting your daily protein targets through food and supplementation, additional amino acids may offer limited extra benefit — your protein powder already contains a full amino acid profile. That said, amino acids come into their own in specific situations: training fasted, long endurance sessions where a full shake isn't practical, or as a lower-calorie option between meals. Think of them as a precision tool rather than a replacement for whole protein. Pair them with a solid nutritional base that includes creatine and electrolytes for best results.

Are amino acid supplements safe to take every day?

Yes — amino acids are naturally occurring nutrients your body uses continuously, and supplementing with them daily is considered safe for healthy adults at standard doses. The key is choosing products that are free from unnecessary additives, artificial sweeteners, and proprietary blends that obscure what you're actually taking. Every amino acid supplement on Faithful to Nature meets our ingredient standards — so you know exactly what's in the product and why. As always, if you have an underlying health condition or are pregnant, check with your healthcare practitioner first.
